Buddhist Prayer Ritual at Wat Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Wat Doi Suthep is a Theravada Buddhist Temple built in 1383 just outside Chiang Mai on top of a large hill. There is a great story behind the building of Wat Doi Suthep temple. A white elephant carrying a relic of the buddha was sent into the jungle to find a location for a temple to be built. On finding Doi Aoy Chang, now known as Elephant mountain, it climbed to the top, trumpeted three times and collapsed. This was taken as a sign from the buddha of where Doi Suthep temple should be built.
